BEOWULF
Mythologocal expressions in clay

A research & development phase exploring new artistic style in clay, inspired by mythology and Beowulf – building the foundation for future large-scale sculptures.

Previous work that was inspired by Beowulf

About this project:
This R&D project explores how Beowulf can inform a future series of large-scale sculptures. It focuses on experimenting with clay, form, surface and scale, alongside research and reflection, to develop the ideas, methods and direction needed for a later major body of work that engages with the public through exhibition, sculpting workshops, open studio tours and opportunities for individuals to do work experience in a functioning sculpture studio.
My 15+ years working in the film industry as a sculptor, mould maker, and art finisher—on set for productions such as Dr Who, plus teaching sculpture for prosthetics and props—has given me strong technical foundations in traditional and digital making.
This R&D allows me to evolve beyond commercial work into a personal, expressive practice, testing new approaches to mythological storytelling in clay.
The intended outcome is a strong foundation for a larger sculptural body of work. This includes a developed visual language, tested approaches to figurative form and scale, and a clearer understanding of how the work might exist in space. The project will result in a group of resolved sculptures that function as studies and reference points for the next stage.
